Course registration fee is $195. Students are required to enroll, for a one-time charge of $45, in the 21 Acres School. Enrollment fee is for a two year period. Enrollees receive advance notice of class availability and occasional special discount offers. Event Details

Backyard Farming Is a five-week course beginning on February 22 and covers the topics of plant biology, building soil fertility, compost and plant nourishment, seed selection and  plant starts,  garden design and scheduling. Course will be taught by Dr. Elizabeth Wheat, current University of Washington instructor and lead coordinator of the UW Student Farm.

Class sessions, 6:30-8:30 p.m.:

  • February 22: Visioning the Farm - Plant Biology 101, Figure out what to grow!
  • February 29: Preparing the Soil - How to build and sustain soil fertility
  • March 7: Compost Gold - Create an easy system to nourish plant with free material
  • March 14: Making Great Choices - How to select seeds, starts and transplants
  • March 21: Timing is Everything - Design a planting calendar to get the most out of space

This is the first Core Course in the Growing Series of classes. Future courses feature Choices for Sustainable Living, Sustainable Systems at Work, as well as health and climate change issues.A new certificate program, the Sustainability & Stewardship Certificate, is available to students who complete studies in one or more sustainability fields.

About 21 Acres School:

A non-profit school dedicated to teaching people how to grow, eat and live sustainably. The new 21 Acres School offers continuing education classes that focus on principles of sustainable agriculture, including those related to not only food and food systems, but also home energy and water conservation, tools for local economic development and quality of life improvement for our community.

The School is located in the newly green-built Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living and will serve its students by using an agricultural context in which to learn about principles of sustainability and quality of life improvements.
